MASOALA  DESTINATION
 
 
Madagascar spit from African land mass around 165 million years ago. This was during the age of the reptiles at about time when flowering plant were beginning to blossom and primitive mammals and birds were finding the niche among their giant dinosaur cohabitants. As a result of continental drift away its present position about 1000 million years ago. Later, approximately 88 million years ago, the eastern half of Madagascar broke off from the African mainland, moving northward to eventually become India. Since then, Madagascar remained at its present size and shape, isolated from the rest world.
 
 
Madagascar’s isolation for over 80 million years ago created an explosion of plants and animals found nowhere else on earth. The wildlife’s conservation in Madagascar is a worldwide priority, because Madagascar recognize of massive wealth of endemic flora and fauna.
 
 
Over 80% of Madagascar’s wildlife is endemic, and there is a huge array of interesting critters to be spotted. There is over 12 000 species of flowering plant (85% endemic) including 1 000 species native orchids, so more all the rest in Africa continent.
 
 
Madagascar’s 6 families of plants are endemics; 4220 tree species, a whopping 96% are endemic and certainly largest tree: baobab, genus Adansonia. Madagascar has seven species of baobabs (Adansonia) and 6 species are endemics here then seventh is known to find in Africa and eighth is known to grow in Australia
 
 
There are more 200 000 species on the island, living in habitats ranging from mountain tops to mangrove swamps and the rainforests to desert. The resident are as unique as they are diverse. Stile unknown how many species there are present-day in Madagascar, so several thousands of succulents, countless insects, over 350 species of frog, more 370 kinds of reptile, five families of birds and approaching 200 different mammals
 
 
The orthologue’s destination its 120 bird’s species only found here and 5 endemic families which are Vangas, Ground rollers, Mesites, Asitys and Couas
 
 
Attraction with Madagascar wildlife to discover the lemurs, snakes, chameleons, geckos,… Masoala National Park is among the best place for biodiversity, a lots of visitors have already seen here about area they feel paradise and they will never forget.
 
 
Masoala National Park, in northeast Madagascar, is the largest of the island’s protected areas, of lowland rainforest in Madagascar. Masoal peninsulas is so different from anywhere else on earth in Madagascar, where the primary forest from the ocean level until 1311 meters. Masoala established national park in 1997.  Total Park protects area 2,300 square kilometers and over 4,000 square kilometers all this peninsula area.
 
 
And 3 Marines reserves such as Marine reserve Tampolo 16 square kilometers, Ambodilaitry 13 square kilometers and Ifaho 10 square kilometeres. Those marine parks protect coral reefs and a dazzling array of marine life. Masoala peninsula is exceptionally diverse due to its huge size, and variety of habitats. Altogether the park protects rainforest, coastal forest, flooded forest, marsh and mangrove. Masoala provides an excellent opportunity to experience the unique fauna and flora of this island.
 
 
There are 10 species, such as the flamboyant Red Ruffed Lemur, Masoala Moor’s Lemur, Masoala scosh Lemur which are native to the peninsula; Birds: 90, Reptiles: 60, Frogs: 44, Mammals: 50, Rodents:9, Insectivores: 10, Bats: 14, Carnivores: 7, 9 species of mangroves, Fish: 23, Butterflies: 135
 
 
Additional notes: Marine wildlife: 164 coral species, 49 mollusk species, 4 species of sea turtles, 27 sea cucumber species,  97 species of bony fish, 2 species of whales, 2 species of dolphins, 1 species of dugong
 
 
. Previously the riparian people left inside and when the park established they move to build the village, most they choose on the sea cost. And more than 20 « multiple use zones » part of peninsula that allow local people to fish, panting products and food, collect food, harvest medicinal plants, and cut wood for construction under the supervision of park officials to ensure a that their activities do not exceed sustainable levels.
 
 
Masoala National park are included the 5.2 square kilometers Special Reserve of Nosy Mangabe
 
 
Nosy Mangabe island among the biggest with 5 islands in Antongil Bay, it is very famous for research center since 1966 until today about the Aye-Aye, Black and white L., White fronted brown L., Frog,… This is blanket’s pristine lowland rainforest and 5 kilometers from the beach cost of Maroantsetra and accessible by boat in 20 mn.

Fly from Tana to airport in Maroantsetra where guide will meet and assist you. Then transfer from airport about 45mn to the harbor and fairy by the speed boat to reach Masoala peninsulas. The boat trip lasts about 2h if we’re lucky we’ll might to encounter dolphins and hump backed whales during July to September. Arrival and installation in the lodge
 
 
Afternoon, relax on the beach or exploration of the surroundings of the hotel or swimming. Night walk in the forest surround the camp to see some night active lemurs (masoala scho’s lemur, masoala more’s lemur, brown mouse lemur, snake and frog)

Breakfast and day visit of the rainforest of the park.
 
Masoala National Park consists of rainforest with a rare endemic wildlife. Several species of lemurs are found like Red ruffed Lemur and white fronted lemur. The site is also popular for bird watching by the presence of unusual the Helmet Vanga, an enormous vanga with an enormous blue bill Vanga and this is Masoala’s star, parson’s chameleon…

Breakfast and early in the morning to discover the bird watching in Masoala National Park. Most every years we are even lucky enough to see a nest of this marvelous bird. Some of the more commonly find Red-breasted Coua, Helmet Vanga, Brown Mesite, and handsome Scaly and Short-legged Ground-Rollers. However, our ramblings will set off with higher hopes, as we also stand a good chance of finding the elusive Bernier’s Vanga, which prefers pandanus palm swamps. Although sightings are not likely, the peninsula is also home to the magnificent Madagascar scops Owl, Madagscar nightjar…
 
 
Afternoon free: relax or walk on the beach or swimming. Night walk in another part of the forest around the camp. Overnight at the Lodge.

Day 4 Masoala (B/L/D)
 
 
Breakfast and the day excursion by traditional canoe on Tampolo River to visit beautiful landscape, mangrove site and then snorkeling in the corral barrier. Marine protected reserve under the seabed very colorful corals, several reef fish species such as parrotfish, surgeonfish, clown fish swimming among the sea anemones, shellfish, possible to see green sea turtles and dolphin. Picnic lunch based on seafood on the beach. Afternoon, visit plantation of vanilla, coffee, clove, pepper and traditional dance and sing.

Day 5: Masoala – Nosy-Mangabe (B/L/D)
 
 
Breakfast and transfer by the boat lasts about 2h if we’re lucky might to see dolphins and hump backed whales during July to two weeks in September. This is pristine lowland rain forest island 5.20 square kilometers and the best place to see black and white ruffed lemur and white fronted brown lemur. Nosy Mangabe area’s reptile and amphibian fauna are equally dramatic; among the myriad of colorful and photogenic frogs, chameleons, and geckos we may encounter are the Panther chameleon (furcifer pardalis), stump-tailed chameleon (brookesia pereransii), which is the second smallest chameleon in the world, yellow backed mantilla (mantella leavigata), green day-geckos, and incredibly camouflaged leaf-tailed gecko (uroplatus fimbruatus) sleeping during the day. We may see snakes such as tree boa (sinzenia Madagascariensis), hognose snake (leiohetorodon madagascariensis),
 
 
We also visit a Betsimisaraka tombs establish in middle the island, this ancient graves of the first inhabitants of the island and the rock inscriptions left by Dutch sailors during the 16th century on the beach called “Plage des Hollandais”.

Breakfast at the hotel and transfer back to the airport for flight to Tana. Depend of flight schedule we have ashort walk to explore the wonderful colorful Tomato frog (Dicophis antongilii) endemic in the area.

HOLIDAY MAKIRA NATURAL PARK (5 days and 4 nights)
 
 
Day 1: Tana – maroantsetra – Makira: L/D
 
 
Flight from Tana to Maroantsetra, island located on the North East coast of Madagascar. Someone will welcome and assist you. Transfer to harbor, we’ll take a local boat on Antenambalana River, dive in 4h to landing stage Andaparaty
 
 
Picnic lunch on river side. This will be a long and strenuous day of hiking 2h, with over 700m of elevation, along this bulky mountain has the largest caldera of any of the world’s active volcanoes. And need only the strong people can be doing this trip. The latter is our reason for spending the night camping on the mountain.

Day 2: Makira: B/L/D
 
 
We will spend the cool hours of the morning to discover the rainforest of this wonderful national park. Targets will include silky sifaka, ring-tailed mongoose, grey bamboo lemur.. We might spot lemurs including red-breasted coua, velvet Asity and broad billed roller
 
 
Picnic lunch in the forest, and in the afternoon back to the camp.
 
 
Night walk surrounding the camp. We might see lemurs including Wolly lemur, Eastern Sportive-Lemur, and greater dwarf Lemur.,

Day 3: Makira: B/L/D
 
 
The park’s wildlife is very rich encompassing lemurs, birds, frogs, chameleons and soon but the highlights are indisputably the Red ruffed lemur and the Helmet Vanga bird. The park has other target birds (Bernier’s Vanga and Short leg and scaly ground roller) and parson’s chameleon (cacuma parsonii) but they are very elusive.

Afternoon free: relax or swimming in natural pool. Night walk in another part of the forest around the camp. Overnight at the camp
 
 
 
 
Day 4: Makira – Maroantsetra: B/L/D
 
 
Breakfast and early morning, we make the long hike off the mountain, though this time with gravity on our side! Along the way, we’ll have chances to continue savoring the wildife and plant. And continuous to the boat harbor, then boat transfer back to landing stage Ankompy and then drive to the hotel.
 
 
Lunch in hotel. Afternoon, a short walk in the town for exploring incredible colorful Tomato Frog (discophis antogilii) which is the endemic in this area.

All team are ready then departure to Farankarainana
 
 
First, transfer from the town to harbor then board a local boat to get Adranofotsy in 1h 30mn on the river. And then continue to walk in 1h to reach Farankarainana. The road is good for walking, establishing at the camping. Picnic lunch on the camp then swimming and relaxing on the beautiful beach and explore the nature through the ring-tailed mongoose, white fronted brown lemur, bamboo lemur,… And night walk to search the nocturnal animals especially greater dwarf lemur, mousse lemur, several birds, snakes and reptiles species, of course the Aye-Aye we often find on this reserve.

After Breakfast  short visit to discovering Ambatolaidama forest  which part of Masoala National Park to visit among the endemic animal on the region: the Red Ruffed Lemur and we may see as well as Birds that can be found here include Helmed Vanga, scaly ground roler, white headed vanga, wood rail, and the tree boa, several frogs and reptiles,…
 
 
After visit the park, return to the camp, lunch and departure to Ampôkafo. This is the first climb up the mountain 446 meters altitude from the sea’s level.

Day 6: Antsambalahy – Marofinaritra – Antalaha (B/L/D)
 
 
Breakfast and depart along the way. Lunch in Morofinaritra, this is the village where we take a car (taxi-brousse ). Reaching Antalaha the remote paradise isn’t easy; this is a tough drive on a very bad road. Steep slopes, mud, and river crossings will make for a truly adventurous day.
 
 
Day 7: Antalaha – Samava – Marojejy NP – Camp Mantella (B/L/D)
 
 
Breakfast and depart to Marojejy National Park (5h drive). Picnic lunch on the way. Arrival and installation to the camp. The Marojejy massif mountain are extremely rich and diverse of the fauna and flora. The park is also home to12 species of lemurs, this is the best place in Madagascar to see the silky sifaka, including the five rarest primates in the world, which is endemic in the region. There are more 125 bird species, 150 species of reptiles and amphibians, 30 species of palm trees and more 300 species of ferns and where the place to find also the takhtajania prierii a tree in the winteraceae family, which is believed to exist on earth about 120 million years ago. This bulky mountain has the largest caldera of any of the world’s active volcanoes.
 
 
Manantenina village,this is where we start to hike until to Camp Mantella. We discover the primary rainforests. We will have the opportunity to may see several species of reptiles and amphibians, and birds species including hook billed, white headed, Helmet Vanga and red breasted coua,…
 
Arrival at Camp Mantella (450m altitude) installation to the camp and lunch.
 
In the afternoon we discover the surroundings of Camp Mantella, visiting the Humbert waterfalls.

We have opportunities to see the rare Silky sifaka endemic to this rainforest.
 
We keep to walk until to camp Marojejia for lunch. And in the afternoon we continue our walk to Camp Simpona. Arrival and establish to the camp localize at 1250m altitude.
 
Night walk around the camp is possible.

Day 9: Camp Simpona – Summit – Camp Marojejia (B/L/D)
 
 
 
 
Early breakfast and departure for the highest elevation and rising up to the peak of Marojejy’s summit at 2132m altitude. This will be a long and strenuous day of hiking
 
 
The trail in the park and up to the summit are very hard and steep, so need strong physical condition. The summit is often wet and cloudy. Marojejy Mountain, an astoundingly isolated island of lush rainforest. From the summit enjoys views out across beautiful forest, with the mighty Indian Ocean.
 
 
Spend full morning hiking and then walk down to the camp for lunch.
 
In the afternoon we keep walk down to camp Marojejia.
 
 
At sunset, possibility to go for a night walk around the camp.

Day 10: C amp Marojejia – Camp Mantella – Sambava; B/L/D
 
 
Breakfast and we make the long hike off the mountain, though this time with gravity on our side! Along the way, we’ll have chances to continue savoring the unique and rarely-seen birdlife of Marojejy and continue to live the primary forest portions to the national park boundary. Steep slopes, mud, and river crossings will make for a truly adventurous day 5h to walk.
 
Picnic lunch on the road and drive back to Sambava in 2 hours

Day 11: Sambava – Vohemar – Daraina Reserve: B/L/D
 
 
Breakfast depart for Sambava early this morning and transfer to Vohemar (3hours drive). Lunch on the way in a local restaurant. From Vohemar to reaching Daraina the remote paradise isn’t easy; this is a tough drive on a very bad road. Steep slopes, mud, and river crossings will make for a truly adventurous day (4 hours of bumpy road).
 
Upon arrival and installation at the camp.
 
At sunset possibility to go for a night walk in search of the rare Aye aye.
 
 
Night in Daraina
 
 
Day 12: Daraina Reserve (B/L/D)
 
 
Breakfast and we’ll spend a full morning (1h drive) exploring, hoping to connect with the local endemic of Daraina reserve. Today, we venture away from the camp and into the interior to the mysterious and only recently discovered last one species of Madagascar. The local ONG call FANAMBY manage this reserve, and this is the last natural deciduous forest which home of endemic Golden-crowed sifakas (propithecus tattersalli), which is one of the rarest of all lemurs and listed as one of the 25 most threatened primates in the world. Here you may find over several bird including hook-billed vanga, crested coua, Madagascar kestrel,…
 
 
Picnic lunch in the forest and then afternoon back to Daraina after visit

Day: 13 Daraina – Sambava (B/L/D)
 
 
Although this is a day’s drive back to Sambava can be reach the fly, we do have time for a short stop somewhere for photo.

Early in the morning we start to live to climb the mountain at 2h to the top. This bulky mountain has the largest caldera of any of the world’s active volcanoes. This will be a long and strenuous day of hiking, with over 1000m of elevation. This is a second climb up the mountain. From the mountain’s top this trip start have many leech, cloud and often rain. Need good physical condition for hiking and we’ll be strenuous. There will also be opportunities swim on the river

This trail often muddy and across several river with slippery rocks, but in our group several porter can be help you in the trip.we will see more lemur, frog, snake, bird and insect. We will connect very marvelous landscape

Day 8: Antanandavahely – Cap East (Ambohitralanana) – Antalaha (B/L/D)
 
 
Breakfast and board local pirogue from Antanandavahely and transfer to Ambohitralanana(4h). On this trip we’ll see the crocodile in river and. we across the river by pirogue ferry and drive to Antalaha by local car 4×4 (4h drive). Picnic lunch on the way.

Day 9: Antalaha – Samava – Marojejy NP – Camp Mantella (B/L/D)
 
 
Breakfast and departure to Marojejy National Park (5H drive). Picnic lunch on the way. Arrival and installation to the camp. The Marojejy massif mountain are extremely rich and diverse of the fauna and flora. The park is also home to12 species of lemurs, this is the best place in Madagascar to see the silky sifaka, including the five rarest primates in the world, which is endemic in the region. There are over 125 bird species, 150 species of reptiles and amphibians, 30 species of palm trees and over 300 species of ferns and where the place to find also the takhtajania prierii a tree in the winteraceae family, which is believed to exist on earth about 120 million years ago. (This bulky mountain has the largest caldera of any of the world’s active volcanoes.)
 
 
Manantenina village,this is where we start to hike until to Camp Mantella. We discover the primary rainforests. We will have the opportunity to may see several species of reptiles and amphibians, and birds species including hook billed, white headed, Helmet Vanga and red breasted coua,…

Day 10: Camp Mantillaella – Camp Simpona (B/L/D)
 
 
 
 
Breakfast and walking up to Camp Simpona about 6h.
 
 
We have opportunities to see the rare Silky sifaka endemic to this rainforest.
 
We keep to walk until to camp Marojejia for lunch. And in the afternoon we continue our walk to Camp Simpona. Arrival and establish to the camp localize at 1250m altitude.
 
Night walk around the camp is possible.

Day 11: Camp Simpona – Summit – Camp Marojejia (B/L/D)
 
 
 
 
Early breakfast and departure for the highest elevation and rising up to the peak of Marojejy’s summit at 2132m altitude. This will be a long and strenuous day of hiking
 
 
The trail in the park and up to the summit are very hard and steep, so need strong physical condition. The summit is often wet and cloudy. Marojejy Mountain, an astoundingly isolated island of lush rainforest. From the summit enjoys views out across beautiful forest, with the mighty Indian Ocean.
 
 
Spend full morning hiking and then walk down to the camp for lunch.
 
In the afternoon we keep walk down to camp Marojejia.
 
 
At sunset, possibility to go for a night walk around the camp.

Day 12: C amp Marojejia – Camp Mantella – Sambava; B/L/D
 
 
Breakfast and we make the long hike off the mountain, though this time with gravity on our side! Along the way, we’ll have chances to continue savoring the unique and rarely-seen birdlife of Marojejy and continue to live the primary forest portions to the national park boundary. Steep slopes, mud, and river crossings will make for a truly adventurous day 5h to walk.

Day 13: Sambava – Vohemar – Daraina Reserve: B/L/D
 
 
Breakfast depart for Sambava early this morning and transfer to Vohemar (3hours drive). Lunch on the way in a local restaurant. From Vohemar to reaching Daraina the remote paradise isn’t easy; this is a tough drive on a very bad road. Steep slopes, mud, and river crossings will make for a truly adventurous day (4 hours of bumpy road).
 
Upon arrival and installation at the camp.
 
At sunset possibility to go for a night walk in search of the rare Aye aye.

Day 14: Daraina Reserve (B/L/D)
 
 
Breakfast and we’ll spend a full morning (1h drive) exploring, hoping to connect with the local endemic of Daraina reserve. Today, we venture away from the camp and into the interior to the mysterious and only recently discovered last one species of Madagascar. The local ONG call FANAMBY manage this reserve, and this is the last natural deciduous forest which home of endemic Golden-crowed sifakas (propithecus tattersalli), which is one of the rarest of all lemurs and listed as one of the 25 most threatened primates in the world. Here you may find over several bird including hook-billed vanga, crested coua, Madagascar kestrel,…

Fly from Tana to airport in Maroantsetra where guide will meet and assist you. Then transfer to the harbor to take a local boat and drive 1h30mn to landing stage Andranofotsy. walk trip lasts about 1h 30mn can be reach Farankarainana. Ring tailed-mongoose welcome us then installation on the camping, lunch on the camp. Afternoon swimming, relax on the beach or exploration surrounding the camp and evening we’ll see the Eastern grey bamboo lemur, Madagascar tree boa, lowland streaked tenrec surrounding the camp and birds including the Madagascar Pygmy kingfisher, created ibis, blue coua,.. After breakfast, a short walk on the beach will take you to the Masoala National Park’s boundary. Day devoted to wildlife watching. The lowland rainforest of the national park is home endemic lemurs such as the red ruffed lemur, white fronted brown lemur and nocturnal lemurs: Masoala woolly or moor’s lemur and Masoala sportive or scosh lemur, brown mouse lemur and 90 species of birds, some of them are endemic as the brown mesite, helmeted vanga, blue vanga, short leg ground roller and scaly ground roller.
 
Free picnic lunch in the camp. The afternoon will be spent at leisure. Night walks should reveal other mammals including Eastern Woolly, and diminutive Brown Mouse Lemurs. The reserve’s herpetofauna is also impressive, with brightly-patterned and bizarre frogs, geckos, and chameleons, including the giant Parson’s Chameleon. Overnight and dinner at the camp.

Day 6:  Masoala (Ambodiforaha) – Sahalegno (B/L/D)
 
 
Breakfast depart along the way stile in the National Park, we connect coastal forest and Madagascar’s most bizarre, wonderful, and other-worldly landscape, an endlessly intricate maze of jagged eroded limestone. Our main aim in visiting this park is simply to experience the Tsingy, though this being Madagascar, there is plenty of biological diversity to go along with the geological wonders. Possible to see the immigrate birds including Madagascar pratincole, Madagascar starling, broad-billed roller and several terns’ s colony such as brown noddy, lesser creasted tern, roseate tern…

Day 15: Ambodirafia – Ambohitralanana – Antalaha (B/L/D)
 
 
Short walk 3h to visit the detached reserve Ambodirafia the home of endemic plant such as the pitcher plant (nepenthes masoalensis), this reserve is the last natural habitat of the plant. The reserve is a deciduous forest, semi evergreen forest and degraded grassland.
 
 
We leave early to Ambohitralanana to catch the car (taxi-brousse) and drive to Antalaha.
 
 
 
 
Day 16: Antalaha – Sambava – Tananarive (B)
 
 
Transfer from Antalaha to airport Sambava and flight back to Tana

Picnic lunch on the camp then swimming and relaxing on the beautiful beach, exploring the nature through the ring-tailed mongoose, white fronted brown lemur, bamboo lemur,… And night walk to search the nocturnal animals especially greater dwarf lemur, mousse lemur, several birds, snakes and reptiles species, of course the Aye-Aye we often find on this reserve.

Many of the island’s most spectacular endemic birds are restricted to this rainforest, opportunities with species including short leg and Scaly Ground-Rollers, Red-fronted Coua, Madagascar Blue coua, Madagascar Blue Pigeon, Madagascar Pygmy Kingfisher, and Madagascar Paradise-Flycatcher. Surround the camp, we might encounter, the bizarre Lowland Streaked Tenrec.
 
 
Afternoon, relax on the beach or exploration of the surroundings of the hotel or swimming.
 
 
Night walk, we should find Masoala Woolly, Dwarf, and Brown Mouse-Lemurs. Breakfast and early in the morning to discover the bird watching in Masoala National Park. Most every years we are even lucky enough to see a nest of helmet vanga, this is marvelous bird. This will be a long and strenuous day of hiking in secondary forest inside and outside national park, there will be loads of birding along the way. We should run into Blue Pigeon, Lesser Vasa Parrot, Cuckoo-Roller Pigeon, Madagascar Paradise Flycatcher, and finding it will require an adventurous. We will seek the enigmatic endemic Red-breasted Coua, Helmet Vanga, Brown Mesite, and handsome Scaly and Short-legged Ground-Rollers. However, our ramblings will set off with higher hopes, as we also stand a good chance of finding the elusive Bernier’s Vanga, which prefers pandanus palm swamps. Although sightings are not likely, the peninsula is also home to the magnificent Rail. During the search, we will find loads of other seabirds, including Madagascar pratincole, brown noody, and tern colony that are rarely seen in most of Madagascar
 
 
Afternoon free: relax or walk on the beach or swimming. Night walk in another part of the forest around the camp. Overnight at the Lodge.

Day 7: Masoala – Nosy-Mangabe (B/L/D)
 
 
Breakfast and leave the Peninsula to Nosy Mangabe, the boat trip lasts about 2h if we’re lucky might to see dolphins and hump backed whales during July to two weeks in September. This is pristine lowland rain forest island 5.20 square kilometers and the best place to see black and white ruffed lemur and white fronted brown lemur. Nosy Mangabe area’s reptile and amphibian fauna are equally dramatic; among the myriad of colorful and photogenic frogs, chameleons, and geckos we may encounter are the Panther chameleon, stump-tailed chameleon (brookesia pereransii), which is the second smallest chameleon in the world, yellow backed mantilla (mantella leavigata), green day-geckos, and incredibly camouflaged leaf-tailed gecko sleeping during the day.
 
 
We also visit a Betsimisaraka tombs establish in middle the island, this ancient graves of the first inhabitants of the island and the rock inscriptions left by Dutch sailors during the 16th century on the beach called “Plage des Hollandais”.

TRIP CONSIDERATIONS
 
 
PACE:
 
 
Moderate, in the bird watching tour we start when the sun comes up just after 4am, and early morning is the prime birding time. And we spend most of day till the sun sets about 6pm, meaning that days are not extremely long. In the trekking tour we spend all through the day 7 – 8 hours for hiking. There are some long drives (8-10 hours) when we must catch the fly on this tour. The tour is spent on national and secondary roads (on sandy or muddy tracks) which are mostly in decent condition, though often winding.
 
 
CLIMATE:
 
 
The most eastern rainforest sites have moderate temperatures (21°-27°C). During winter season are a lot of rain and humid but possible along day dry. The weather in summer is very warm and humid (75°-80°F, 24°-29°C).
 
 
ACCOMMODATION:
 
 
In the honeymoon trip in masoala through night will be spent at a basic eco-lodge close National Park with local conditions allow. Excursion Nosy Mangabe and hiking to Farankarainana the camping thatched by local product; Makira, Ambatolaidama and Marojejy thatched by metal product that allowed in NP. Hiking Maroantsetra until Cap – East and Antalaha we camp mostly in jungle and near village. Hiking Maroantsetra – Cap Masoala until Antalaha we camp mostly on the beach and near village.

During the search, we will find loads of other seabirds, including Madagascar pratincole, brown noody, and tern colony that are rarely seen in most of Madagascar

Day 4 Masoala (B/L/D)
 
 
Breakfast and the day excursion by traditional canoe on Tampolo River to visit beautiful landscape, mangrove site and then snorkeling in the corral barrier. Marine protected reserve under the seabed very colorful corals, several reef fish species such as parrotfish, surgeonfish, clown fish swimming among the sea anemones, shellfish, possible to see green sea turtles and dolphin. Picnic lunch based on seafood on the beach. Afternoon, visit plantation of vanilla, coffee, clove, pepper and traditional dance and sing.

Day 5: Masoala – Nosy-Mangabe (B/L/D)

Breakfast and leave the Peninsula to Nosy Mangabe, the boat trip lasts about 2h if we’re lucky might to see dolphins and hump backed whales during July to two weeks in September. This is pristine lowland rain forest island 5.20 square kilometers and the best place to see black and white ruffed lemur and white fronted brown lemur. Nosy Mangabe area’s reptile and amphibian fauna are equally dramatic; among the myriad of colorful and photogenic frogs, chameleons and geckos we may encounter are the Panther chameleon, stump-tailed chameleon (brookesia pereransii), which is the second smallest chameleon in the world, yellow backed mantilla (mantella leavigata), green day-geckos, and incredibly camouflaged leaf-tailed gecko sleeping during the day. We may see also the snakes such as tree boa (sinzenia Madagascariensis), hognose snake (leiohetorodon madagascariensis),

We also visit a Betsimisaraka tombs establish in middle the island, this ancient graves of the first inhabitants of the island and the rock inscriptions left by Dutch sailors during the 16th century on the beach called “Plage des Hollandais”.

Day 6: Nosy Mangabe – Maroantsetra – Sambava (B/L/D)
 
 
Speedboat transfer back to Maroantsetra.
 
 
Transfer to airport and flight Maroantsetra to Sambava. Depending the flight schedule, we may have short stope and walk in town to explore the wonderful colorful Tomato frog (Dicophis antongilii) endemic in the area
 
 
 
 
Day 7: Samava – Marojejy NP – Camp Mantella (B/L/D)
 
 
Breakfast and depart to Marojejy National Park (5h drive). Picnic lunch on the way. Arrival and installation to the camp. The Marojejy massif mountain are extremely rich and diverse of the fauna and flora. The park is also home to12 species of lemurs, this is the best place in Madagascar to see the silky sifaka, including the five rarest primates in the world, which is endemic in the region. There are more 125 bird species, 150 species of reptiles and amphibians, 30 species of palm trees and more 300 species of ferns and where the place to find also the takhtajania prierii a tree in the winteraceae family, which is believed to exist on earth about 120 million years ago. This bulky mountain has the largest caldera of any of the world’s active volcanoes.
 
 
Manantenina village,this is where we start to hike until to Camp Mantella. We discover the primary rainforests. We will have the opportunity to may see several species of reptiles and amphibians, and birds species including hook billed, white headed, Helmet Vanga and red breasted coua,…

Day 8: Camp Mantillaella – Camp Simpona (B/L/D)
 
 
 
 
Breakfast and walking up to Camp Simpona about 6h.
 
 
We have opportunities to see the rare Silky sifaka endemic to this rainforest.
 
We keep to walk until to camp Marojejia for lunch. And in the afternoon we continue our walk to Camp Simpona. Arrival and establish to the camp localize at 1250m altitude.
 
Night walk around the camp is possible.

Day 9: Camp Simpona – Summit – Camp Marojejia (B/L/D)
 
 
 
 
Early breakfast and departure for the highest elevation and rising up to the peak of Marojejy’s summit at 2132m altitude. This will be a long and strenuous day of hiking
 
 
The trail in the park and up to the summit are very hard and steep, so need strong physical condition. The summit is often wet and cloudy. Marojejy Mountain, an astoundingly isolated island of lush rainforest. From the summit enjoys views out across beautiful forest, with the mighty Indian Ocean.
 
 
Spend full morning hiking and then walk down to the camp for lunch.
 
In the afternoon we keep walk down to camp Marojejia.
 
 
At sunset, possibility to go for a night walk around the camp.

Day 10: C amp Marojejia – Camp Mantella – Sambava; B/L/D
 
 
Breakfast and we make the long hike off the mountain, though this time with gravity on our side! Along the way, we’ll have chances to continue savoring the unique and rarely-seen birdlife of Marojejy and continue to live the primary forest portions to the national park boundary. Steep slopes, mud, and river crossings will make for a truly adventurous day 5h to walk.

Day 11: Sambava – Vohemar – Daraina Reserve: B/L/D
 
 
Breakfast depart for Sambava early this morning and transfer to Vohemar (3hours drive). Lunch on the way in a local restaurant. From Vohemar to reaching Daraina the remote paradise isn’t easy; this is a tough drive on a very bad road. Steep slopes, mud, and river crossings will make for a truly adventurous day (4 hours of bumpy road).
 
Upon arrival and installation at the camp.
 
At sunset possibility to go for a night walk in search of the rare Aye aye.
 
 
Night in Daraina
 
 
Day 12: Daraina Reserve (B/L/D)
 
 
Breakfast and we’ll spend a full morning (1h drive) exploring, hoping to connect with the local endemic of Daraina reserve. Today, we venture away from the camp and into the interior to the mysterious and only recently discovered last one species of Madagascar. The local ONG call FANAMBY manage this reserve, and this is the last natural deciduous forest which home of endemic Golden-crowed sifakas (propithecus tattersalli), which is one of the rarest of all lemurs and listed as one of the 25 most threatened primates in the world. TRIP CONSIDERATIONS
 
 
PACE: Moderate. In the bird watching tour we start when the sun comes up just after 4am, and early morning is the prime birding time. And we spend most of day till the sun sets about 6pm, meaning that days are not extremely long. In the trekking tour we spend all through the day 7 – 8 hours for hiking. There are some long drives (8-10 hours) when we must catch the fly on this tour. The tour is spent on national and secondary roads (on sandy or muddy tracks) which are mostly in decent condition, though often winding.
 
 
CLIMATE: The most eastern rainforest sites have moderate temperatures (21°-27°C). During winter season are a lot of rain and humid but possible along day dry. The weather in summer is very warm and humid (75°-80°F, 24°-29°C).
 
 
ACCOMMODATION: in the honeymoon trip in masoala through night will be spent at a basic eco-lodge close National Park with local conditions allow. Excursion Nosy Mangabe and hiking to Farankarainana the camping thatched by local product; Makira, Ambatolaidama and Marojejy thatched by metal product that allowed in NP. Hiking Maroantsetra until Cap – East and Antalaha we camp mostly in jungle and near village. Hiking Maroantsetra – Cap Masoala until Antalaha we camp mostly on the beach and near village.
 
 
PHOTOGRAPHY: of course wildlife seeking are particularly wonderful photography  and offers excellent chances for nature photography (lemur, bird, insects, reptiles and amphibians…).

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: A valid passport is required; the passport must be valid for at least six months past your intended stay. A visa is required. Currently, 30 day tourist visas can be obtained upon arrival for citizens of the US, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and all European countries. The visa costs approximately $30. A visa can also be obtained advance through a Malagasy embassy or consulate. Advance visas are currently only required of a few nationalities, mostly in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Pascal is a certified guide based in Maroantsetra, offering various tours in Masoala National Park since 2006. Spoken languages include French, English and of course Malagasy as well as a bit German.

Pascal graduated in high school with the specialisation in Tourism. He originally comes from the village of Tanambao Ampano approximately 17km north of Maroantsetra.

He is specialised in bird and lemur watching for wildlife observers, researchers, film crew and anthropologists (assistant) and can organise a wide range of excursions, including hiking expeditions in Masoala National Park, Nosy Mangabe, Makira National Park, Farankaraina Private Reserve, Marojejy.
