Voay is the Malagasy word for crocodile. The word voay is of Indonesian origin. Malagasy people of Bantu origin may use the word mamba when referring to crocodile.

Many lakes with crocodiles are considered sacred throughout Madagascar. The crocodiles are believed to be humans which out of wrong behaviour turned into crocodiles. An example of such a sacred lake is Lac Ravelobe located in the Ankarafantsika National Park.
