The town of Bealanana is located at the foot of the Tsaratanana Massif, about 129 kilometres northeast of Antsohihy. Bealanana can be translated into "where there is lots of sand". Due to the high altitude, the climate provides plenty of rainfall and enables fruitful farming, especially rice.

The Tsaratanana Strict Nature Reserve is located 57 kilometres north of Bealanana. From Bealanana it is possible to climb to Maromokotro (2876m), the highest mountain of Madagascar.
