Anjahankely Tree Nursery
Anjahakely Tree Nursery was established in 2008 to help preserve the environment in the Andrafiamena Andavakoera protected area in north Madagascar.
The tree nursery, located in Anjahakely, fulfils an essential role in the protection of the lemur habitat close to the village and the nearby camp.
Trees planted in the area include Schizolaena viscola, an endemic species and lemur food source, Breanadia salicina and Intsia trees are planted at river sources to protect the waterways and Albizia lebeck are planted as forage for livestock.
Various palms and Dracaena trees are also planted for decoration purposes around Black Lemur Camp. The camp, which supports the tree nursery, employs staff mostly from Anjahakely and nearby villages which in effect supports the local economy and inspires a culture that profits most from the forest by its preservation rather than destruction.
