Ambositra, meaning “where there are many cattle”, is a Betsileo town in Madagascar with around 30,000 inhabitants, many whom are students. The town is renowned for woodcarving and there are countless stores selling souvenirs and other wood products, especially around the 1½km central ring road.

Tourists usually come here shopping for handicrafts and visit the French colonial Benedictine monastery where the nuns make cheese. Various excursions to nearby Betsileo villages can also be arranged from town by guides and tour services. Apart from woodcrafts, the Ambositra area is largely dependent on rice farming and fruit crops.
