After completion it became the residence of the French General Bompard. In 1960, the French Embassy moved into the palace. From 1976 to 1989 President[[Didier Ratsiraka]] lived in the palace before moving to [[Iavoloha]]. From thereon the palace was used as the City Hall with the mayor's office.
