Maintirano is a port town on the west coast of Madagascar. which servers as the capital of the Melaky region. The popularion in Maintirano including the surrounding district of the same name was approximately 16,000 in 2001. Most people in Maintirano are of Sakalava descent. About 55% of the population live from fishing and about 34% from farming. Acriculture include bananas, maize, sweet potatoes and rice.
