Antalaha

Antalaha is a picture-perfect coastal town on the Northeast coast of Madagascar. The town including some unique old buildings dating back to the French colonial times was once the world's centre of vanilla trade. Several large vanilla exporters are headquartered here.

Antalaha is a popular destination among explorers of the East coast. A long beautiful beach is part of the scenery. The region is regularly affected by seasonal cyclones.

Antalaha can be reached by land, sea or air. The quickest way is by plane. An airport is located about ten kilometres south of the town but which is served only by private air charters.

A road in good condition connects Antalaha with Sambava where there is a domestic airport with daily flights. There is an International maritime harbour in the centre of town. The 80 kilometres drive by taxi-brousse from Sambava takes about 1½ hours. Other more adventurous routes are a 3-5 day hike across the Masoala peninsula starting from Maroantsetra or via Cap Est. It's sometimes possible to catch a cargo boat from Maroantsetra, Sainte Marie or Toamasina (Tamatave).

The easiest way to get around Antalaha is by foot, tuk-tuk or pousse-pousse. The central marketplace is of Tanambao is especially busy on Thursday mornings.
