The town of Farahalana is located on both banks of the Maeva River about 25 kilometres south of Sambava along the RN6 towards Antalaha.

The river originates in Marojejy and leads into the Indian Ocean shortly after the town. It's the main hub for agricultural products which are delivered by longboats from upstream. Every Thurstay morning there is a market.
