Antalaha, pronounced Antala, is a coastal town on the Northeast coast of Madagascar. Antalaha is a town with some unique architecture dating back to the French colonial times. The town was once the capital of vanilla since the introduction of vanilla in the 19th century. Several major vanilla exporters are still headquartered here.
A long beautiful beach often with huge waves is part of the scenery and is a popular destination among explorers of the East coast. During the rainy seasons the area affected by cyclones with the last major cyclone in in 2017.
Antalaha can be reached by land, sea or air. The quickest and maybe most comfortable way of transport is by plane. A tarred road in good condition connects Antalaha with Sambava in the north where the domestic airport connects with daily flights. There is an International maritime harbour in the centre of town.
Antalaha has an airport about ten kilometres out of town but but which is not served by scheduled flights other than by private air charters.
The 80 kilometres drive by taxi-brousse from Sambava takes about 1½ hours. Other available and more adventurous routes are a 3-5 day hike across the Masoala peninsula starting from Maroantsetra or via Cap Est. Sometimes it is possible to catch a cargo boat from Maroantsetra, Sainte Marie or Toamasina (Tamatave).
