Antalaha is a charming seaside town on the Northeast coast of Madagascar with parts of its architecture is displaying its French colonial period with a Creole influence. The town was until more recent history the centre of most of the world's natural vanilla trade.

Antalaha with its beautiful beach making up part of the scenery is a popular destination among visitors of the East Coast. A shipyard constructing and repairing traditional wooden dhows can be found in the southern part of the town.

Antalaha and the region are regularly affected by cyclones, which have every few years years wiped out seasonal vanilla crops affecting world vanilla prices.

Antalaha can be reached by road, sea, or by air. An airport about ten kilometres south of the town is served by private air charters. A road in good condition connects Antalaha with Sambava where a domestic airport has scheduled flights daily from the Capital and other major cities around the country.

The 80-kilometre drive from Sambava by taxi-brousse takes about two. More adventurous routes are a 3-5 day hike across the Masoala peninsula starting from Maroantsetra or around the peninsula via Cap Est. It's also possible to catch a cargo boat from Maroantsetra, Sainte Marie or Toamasina.

The easiest way to get around the town of Antalaha is by foot, tuk-tuk or pousse-pousse. The central marketplace of Tanambao is well worth a visit, especially on Thursdays which is the weekly big market day. A 30-minute walk to the meteorological station on top of the hill at Ambatoratsy offers stunning views of the town and surrounding landscape.

A visit to the botanical park of Macolline including a short canoe from behind the park on the Ankavia River to a traditional brick-making facility is highly recommended.
