Antalaha is a seaside town on the northeast coast of Madagascar, characterised by its French colonial past and weather-beaten, antique Creole-style houses. Until more recently, Antalaha served as the capital of the global vanilla trade.
The town with its beautiful beach making up part of the scenery is popular among visitors of the East Coast. A shipyard constructing and repairing traditional wooden dhows can be found at the beach towards the southern part of the town.
Antalaha and the region are regularly affected by heavy cyclones, which have wiped out countless vanilla plantations every few years, affecting the world's supply and price for natural vanilla.
Antalaha can be reached by road, sea, or by air. An airport about ten kilometres south of the town is served by private air charters. A road in good condition connects Antalaha with Sambava where a domestic airport operates daily flights from the Capital and other cities around the country.
The 80-kilometre drive from Sambava by taxi-brousse takes about two hours. More adventurous routes are a 3-5 day hike across the Masoala peninsula starting from Maroantsetra or around the peninsula via Cap Est. It's also possible to catch a cargo boat from Maroantsetra, Sainte Marie or Toamasina.
The easiest way to get around the town of Antalaha is by foot, tuk-tuk or pousse-pousse. The central marketplace of Tanambao is well worth a visit, especially on Thursdays which is the weekly big market day. A 30-minute walk to the meteorological station on top of the hill at Ambatoratsy offers stunning views of the town and surrounding landscape.
A visit to the botanical park of Macolline including a short canoe from behind the park on the Ankavia River to a traditional brick-making facility is also recommended.
