Antalaha is a seaside town on the northeast coast of Madagascar, characterised by some weather-beaten, antique Creole-style buildings and a French colonial past. Until more recently, Antalaha served as the capital of the global vanilla trade.

Antalaha and the region are regularly affected by cyclones, which have wiped out precious vanilla crops every few years, affecting the world's supply and price for natural vanilla.

Antalaha can be reached by road, sea, or by air. An airport about ten kilometres south of the town is served by private air charters and a road in good condition connects Antalaha with Sambava where a domestic airport operates daily flights from Antananarivo and other major cities around the country.

The 80-kilometre drive from Sambava by taxi-brousse takes about two hours. More adventurous routes are a 3-5 day hike across the Masoala peninsula starting from Maroantsetra or around the peninsula via Cap Est. Sometimes it's possible to catch a cargo boat from Maroantsetra, Sainte Marie or Toamasina.

The easiest way to get around the town is by foot, tuk-tuk or pousse-pousse. The central marketplace of Tanambao is well worth a visit, especially on Thursdays which is the weekly big market day. A 30-minute walk to the meteorological station on top of the hill at Ambatoratsy offers stunning views of the town and surrounding landscape.

A visit to Macolline Park combined with a canoe ride to a traditional brick-making facility is also a highly recommended half-day activity in Antalaha.
