Ambatomanga is located about 37 kilometres east the city boundaries of Antananarivo. Ambatomanga marks the border between the Merina and Bezanozano territories.
Ambatomanga literally means "the blue rock". During the times of the Merina Kingdom, the location was residence for relatives of King Andrianampoinimerina.
The area of Ambatomanga offers great hiking opportunities. Hikers will walk along small rivers, pass green rice fields and small villages where visitors can watch raffia weavers and blacksmiths at their work. A nearby attraction is the first Protestant missionary station.
