Ankify is a harbour and small village in the northwest of Madagascar. Ferries leave from the jetty to the islands of Nosy Be and Nosy Komba. Over the last few years, the harbour has been modernised and now has a shaded market for fruits and souvenirs, surrounded by many small restaurants.
The prices for transfer between Nosy Be and Ankify range between 11,000 and 20,000 Ariary (2024). The 11,000 Ariary Vedette Bac which may be a large steel vessel also carrying cars or a smaller wooden boat with only passengers takes 1.5 or 2 hours. The 15,000 Ariary Catamaran is a faster boat while the 20,000 Coque Rapid shared speed boat for up to 20 people is the fastest option.
For those who do not want to wait until the shared boat is full, there are private boats for about 100,000 Ariary. At Nosy Be harbour, passengers will be greeted by pushy ticket salesmen, who only function to be annoying and increase the price for their service of carrying the passport to the ticket counter. Passengers should ignore these middlemen, pass the gate and buy the ticket directly themselves.
Nearby Ankify direction west are a few hotels along a beautiful stretch of coastline. The district capital Ambanja is located 22 kilometres from Ankify. The once-bad road connecting Ankify with Ambanja was tarred in 2011 and pretty much unmaintained since, partly gravel and partly asphalt mined with potholes that will slow down the ride.
Nature lovers will enjoy a walk through the huge mangroves between the Ankify peninsula and Ampahakabe on the way to or from Ambanja.
