Antalaha is a seaside town on the Northeast coast of Madagascar. Once the centre of almost all of the world's vanilla trade, several vanilla exporters are based here with large warehouses. The town's architecture features old wooden houses of Creole heritage from the French colonial period.

A maritime harbour serves domestic and International shipping routes and a shipyard constructing and repairing traditional wooden dhows can be found along the shore at the south end of the town. Antalaha is a popular destination by visitors of the East Coast with its long beautiful beach making up part of the scenery. Antalaha and the region are regularly affected by cyclones, which have every few years years wiped out seasonal crops affecting world vanilla prices.

Antalaha can be reached by road, sea or by air. An airport about ten kilometres south of the town is served by private air charters. A road in good condition connects Antalaha with Sambava where a domestic airport offers daily flights from the Capital and other major cities.

The 80 kilometres drive by taxi-brousse takes about two hours from Sambava. Other more adventurous routes are a 3-5 day hike across the Masoala peninsula starting from Maroantsetra or via Cap Est. It's sometimes possible to catch a cargo boat from Maroantsetra, Sainte Marie or Toamasina.

The easiest way to get around the town of Antalaha is by foot, tuk-tuk or pousse-pousse. The central marketplace of Tanambao is well worth a visit, especially on Thursdays which is the weekly big market day. From there, a 30 minute walk to the meteorological station on top of the hiill at Ambatoratsy offers a spectacular view of the town and surrounding landscape.

Macolline Park 167.jpg

A recommended activity is a visit the botanical park of Macolline including a short canoe from behind the park on the Ankavia river to a traditional brick making facility.
