Antalaha is a picturesque seaside town on the Northeast coast of Madagascar. Once the centre of almost all of the world's vanilla trade, several large vanilla exporters are based here with large warehouses. The town's architecture features some old houses of likely Creole heritage dating back to the French colonial period.
A maritime harbour serves International shipping lanes and a ship yard constructing and repairing wooden boats by traditional methods can be found along the shore. The town is a popular destination among explorers of the East coast with a long beautiful beach making up part of the scenery. Antalaha and the region is regularly affected by cyclones, which has in previous years wiped out much of the vanilla crops affecting world vanilla prices.
Antalaha can be reached by road, sea or by air. An airport about ten kilometres south of the town is served only by private air charters.
A road in good condition connects Antalaha with Sambava where a domestic airport offers daily flights from the Capital and other major cities. An 80 kilometres drive by taxi-brousse takes about 1½ hours from Sambava. Other more adventurous routes are a 3-5 day hike across the Masoala peninsula starting from Maroantsetra or via Cap Est. It's sometimes possible to catch a cargo boat from Maroantsetra, Sainte Marie or Toamasina.
The easiest way to get around Antalaha is by foot, tuk-tuk or pousse-pousse. The central marketplace of Tanambao is well worth a visit, especially on Thursday mornings.
