Nosy Be is an 312 km² island about 8km offshore the northwest tip of Madagascar. The first inhabitants, prior to the arrival of the Sakalava tribes, were various Malagasy ethnic tribes from the main island, mixed with Comorians and Indians.
Nosy Be has the most developed tourism industry in Madagascar and several large hotels. An international airport charter flights from Paris and Italy as well as domestic flights served by Air Madagascar.
Nosy Be means "big island" in the Malagasy language. The main and town of the island is Andoany, formerly and yet more commonly known as Hell-Ville, can be reached by boat from Ankify harbour.
